Abstract

In the early twentieth century, Kazakh intellectuals sought to nationalize the language of science and education by developing terminology through the internal resources of the Kazakh language. As a member of the scientific and pedagogical tradition of the Alaş movement, Jumaqan Küderiulı contributed to this process by coining numerous botanical terms in his botany textbook Ösimdiktanuw, published in 1927. This study examines 300 botanical terms created by Küderiulı as Kazakh equivalents of Russian botanical terms and analyzes their structural features. The terms were classified into three main categories: simple (root) terms, terms derived through affixation, and terms formed through compounding. Compound terms were further divided into terms consisting of two, three, and four components, and compound nouns. Terms consisting of two, three, and four components were also classified as noun phrases or adjective phrases. The analysis shows that most terms are compound formations created by combining multiple lexical elements. In addition, many derived terms were produced through productive derivational suffixes of Kazakh. Among the simple terms, some words from the general vocabulary became terminological units through semantic narrowing and metaphorization. The findings also show that most terms were formed from Turkic lexical elements, whereas foreignorigin elements were adapted to the phonetic and morphological system of Kazakh. Overall, the study demonstrates that Küderiulı systematically employed the internal resources of Kazakh and remained committed to a national approach to terminology formation.
